  • Shadowbox, board-on-board, stockade

Why wood is still the default in Tallahassee

Walk through Indianhead Acres, Betton Hills or the newer streets off Centerville Road and you will see more wood privacy fence than anything else. It is the lowest-cost way to get a solid six-foot screen, it suits older brick ranches as well as new builds, and almost every fence contractor in Leon County builds it every week. When a board or post fails years later, it can be fixed without replacing the whole run.

The trade-off is upkeep. North Florida gets around five feet of rain a year, summers are humid, and subterranean termites are active across the region. A wood fence that is built the cheap way can lean within a few years. One built the right way commonly lasts well over a decade.

Styles you can ask for

  • Stockade or flat-top privacy: boards side by side on the outside of the rails. Simple and affordable; the rails face your yard.
  • Shadowbox: boards alternate on both sides of the rails, so the fence looks finished from both sides and lets some breeze through. A good choice when the "good side" question comes up with a neighbor.
  • Board-on-board: overlapping boards with no gaps, even as the wood shrinks. Full privacy, more lumber, higher price.
  • Cap and trim: a top cap and trim board protect the end grain from rain and give the fence a finished look. Worth asking about on any style.

What makes a wood fence last here

Most wood fence problems around Tallahassee start at the posts. Ask your contractor about these points before you sign:

  • Post rating: posts should be pressure-treated for ground contact (look for a UC4A or UC4B tag), not the above-ground lumber used for pickets.
  • Post depth and spacing: deeper posts hold better in sandy soil south of town; in the red clay up north, drainage at the bottom of the hole matters so water does not sit around the post.
  • Fasteners: hot-dipped galvanized or coated screws and ring-shank nails. Plain steel streaks and rusts in our humidity.
  • Clearance: boards should not sit on the soil or in mulch. A small gap at the bottom keeps them from wicking up water.
  • Wind: a solid six-foot fence acts like a sail in a summer storm or tropical system. Heavier posts at gates and corners and correct spacing make a real difference.

New pressure-treated pine is wet when it is installed. Most contractors recommend waiting a few months before sealing or staining, then keeping it sealed. See fence staining and sealing.

Typical installed ranges reported by national cost guides such as Angi. Gates, removal of an old fence, slopes, rock or roots and permit fees come on top. The written quote from your contractor is the number that counts.

For a typical backyard of 150 to 200 feet with one walk gate, that puts many wood fence projects in the low-to-mid thousands. The national averages Angi reports for a fence installation sit around $2,700 to $2,900, and a larger Tallahassee lot can land above that. Our fence cost guide breaks it down.

Permits, HOAs and property lines

In many Tallahassee neighborhoods the HOA has more to say about a wood fence than the permit office: height, which side faces out, stain color and how far forward the fence may come. Check your covenants first, and know where your property line is. The Leon County fence permit guide covers the basics.

Before any post hole is dug, Florida law requires a locate request through Sunshine 811 at least two full business days ahead, so buried power, gas, water and cable lines get marked. A good contractor handles this for you; ask to make sure.

Common questions

How long does a wood fence last in Tallahassee?

It depends mostly on the posts, the fasteners and upkeep. A pressure-treated pine fence with ground-contact posts that is kept sealed commonly lasts well over a decade. Skipped maintenance and posts set in standing water shorten that a lot.

Is cedar better than pine here?

Cedar resists rot and insects naturally and looks great, but it costs more and is usually used for pickets and trim. Posts in the ground should still be pressure-treated for ground contact.

Which side of the fence faces the neighbor?

Many HOAs and many neighbors expect the finished side to face out. A shadowbox or board-on-board fence avoids the question because it looks finished from both sides.

How long does installation take?

Once materials are on site, an average backyard fence is often built in one to three days. Scheduling, HOA approval and the 811 locate add time before that.
