Chain link fences

Chain Link Fence Installation in Tallahassee

Chain link is the most affordable way to fence a large yard, keep dogs in or secure a property. Black vinyl-coated chain link looks far better than the old silver kind and blends into trees and lawn.

  • Galvanized or black coated

When chain link is the right call

If the goal is to keep a dog in, mark a property line, or enclose a large lot without spending the price of a privacy fence, chain link is hard to beat. On the bigger lots in Woodville, Bradfordville or out toward Havana, the per-foot savings add up fast. It is also quick to install, lets breezes through in summer storms, and needs almost no upkeep.

Options

  • Galvanized: the traditional silver finish, lowest cost.
  • Black or green vinyl-coated: the coated fabric and posts nearly disappear against lawn and trees, and coating adds protection against corrosion. Many homeowners who "don't want chain link" are happy with black coated.
  • Height: four feet for most yards and front areas, five to six feet for large dogs, taller for security.
  • Privacy slats: slats woven into the mesh give partial privacy for much less than a solid fence.
  • Bottom tension wire or buried edge: stops dogs from pushing under the fence.
  • Gates: walk gates, double drive gates for a trailer or mower, and rolling gates for wide openings. See gates.

Quality details that matter

The gauge of the wire (lower number means thicker), the diameter of the posts, and a top rail instead of only a tension wire decide how a chain link fence handles a large dog, a fallen limb or years of use. Terminal posts at corners, ends and gates should be heavier than line posts and set in concrete. Ask what you are getting in each of these points so you can compare quotes fairly.

What chain link costs

Fence typeInstalled, per linear footGood to know
Chain link (4 ft, galvanized or black coated)$15–$35Cheapest way to enclose a big yard
Farm & ranch (board or wire)$15–$35Long runs bring the per-foot price down
Wood privacy (6 ft pressure-treated pine)$22–$45Shadowbox and board-on-board cost more
Vinyl privacy (6 ft)$35–$60Higher up front, little upkeep
Aluminum (4–5 ft ornamental)$35–$75Pool-code styles and heavier rails cost more

Typical installed ranges reported by national cost guides such as Angi. Gates, removal of an old fence, slopes, rock or roots and permit fees come on top. The written quote from your contractor is the number that counts.

Galvanized four-foot chain link sits at the low end of the range; coated fabric, taller fences and privacy slats move it up. Long straight runs on flat ground cost less per foot than short runs with many corners and gates.

Chain link for businesses

For lots, storage yards and equipment areas, heavier commercial chain link with barbed wire or rolling gates is common. That is covered on our commercial fencing page.

HOA note

Some Tallahassee subdivisions do not allow chain link at all, or only in black coated finish behind the house. Check before you order. More in the permit and HOA guide.

Before any post hole is dug, Florida law requires a locate request through Sunshine 811 at least two full business days ahead, so buried power, gas, water and cable lines get marked. A good contractor handles this for you; ask to make sure.

How getting a quote works

  1. Tell us about the project. Fence type, rough length, timing and ZIP code. It takes about a minute.
  2. One local contractor gets in touch. We pass your request to one licensed fence contractor who works in your area. Not five companies, not a bidding war on your phone.
  3. Free on-site measure and written quote. They walk the line, check gates, slopes and trees, and give you a price in writing. You decide if and when to go ahead.

Common questions

Is black chain link more expensive?

A little. Coated fabric and posts cost more than galvanized, but many homeowners find the look worth it, and the coating adds protection.

Can I add privacy to an existing chain link fence?

Yes. Privacy slats can be woven into most chain link fabric. A contractor can check whether your posts and fabric are in good enough shape.

How tall should a dog fence be?

Four feet works for many dogs; jumpers and large breeds often need five or six. A bottom tension wire or buried edge helps with diggers.
