Types of gates
- Walk gates: three to five feet wide, for people, mowers and wheelbarrows. Four feet wide is a comfortable size for most lawn equipment.
- Double drive gates: two leaves that open in the middle, ten to sixteen feet wide in total. The usual choice for getting a trailer, boat or truck into the backyard.
- Rolling (cantilever or wheeled) gates: for wide openings, sloped driveways and commercial lots where a swinging gate will not fit.
- Automatic driveway gates: a swing or slide gate with an operator, keypad or remote. Common on country properties in Bradfordville, Killearn Lakes and out toward Thomasville.
Why gates sag and how to prevent it
A gate hangs from one post. Every opening pulls that post a tiny bit, and a heavy wood or vinyl leaf slowly drops at the latch side. Over a few years it starts dragging. The fixes are well known, and a good quote includes them:
- A heavier, deeper-set hinge post (for vinyl, an aluminum insert or concrete fill)
- A steel frame or anti-sag kit on wide wood gates
- Hinges rated for the weight and width of the gate
- A drop rod and gate stop on double gates, so wind cannot slam them

Matching the fence
Gates are usually built from the same material as the fence: wood, vinyl, aluminum or chain link. If your fence is a few years old, an exact match may be hard to find; a contractor can suggest something that fits without looking patched.
Driveway gate automation
An automatic gate needs power at the post (or solar on longer driveways), a safety system so the gate does not close on a car or a person, and a way to open it when the power is out. Gate operators are often installed by specialists; if you want automation, say so in your request so the contractor who calls you can handle it or plan with someone who does.
What gates cost
A simple walk gate in a new fence is often a few hundred dollars. Wide double drive gates in vinyl or aluminum commonly run into four figures, and automated driveway gates cost considerably more once the operator, electrical work and safety devices are included. The quote should list every gate separately so you can compare.
Pool gates
A gate in a pool barrier has its own rules: it must open outward and close and latch on its own. See pool fences.
How getting a quote works
- Tell us about the project. Fence type, rough length, timing and ZIP code. It takes about a minute.
- One local contractor gets in touch. We pass your request to one licensed fence contractor who works in your area. Not five companies, not a bidding war on your phone.
- Free on-site measure and written quote. They walk the line, check gates, slopes and trees, and give you a price in writing. You decide if and when to go ahead.
Just need an existing gate fixed? That is a fence repair job and usually quick.
Common questions
How wide should a gate be for a riding mower?
Measure the mower deck and add at least a foot. Many homeowners pick a four- or five-foot walk gate, or a double gate if a trailer or truck needs to get through.
Can a sagging gate be fixed without replacing it?
Often yes: re-setting or reinforcing the hinge post, new hinges, or an anti-sag kit. If the frame itself is rotten, a new gate is usually the better spend.
Can you add a gate to my existing fence?
Usually. The contractor cuts in an opening, sets new gate posts and builds or matches a gate to your fence.
